Day 1: Celebrating the 16th Annual City of Azle's Proclaimed Seth Darnell Day.
Why do we celebrate Seth Darnell?
Reason #1: He inspired a youth movement in the City of Azle, TX called "2010 United" read about his inspiration below:
The City of Azle proclaimed a Seth Darnell Day and its purpose is to remember the impact Seth had on The City of Azle, Texas. Having battled cancer twice and dying at the young age of 19, Seth spent the last few months of his life organizing the youth of Azle to give something back to their hometown and to make Azle a better place in which to live. In his last few weeks of terminal osteosarcoma cancer, Seth knew he had work to do and had no time to waste. His idea was to motivate young people to invest their time and energy into making their town a better place, and in the process become better people by serving others. This group of young adults was Azle High School’s Class of 2010, and Seth's inspiration became "2010 United." Their goal was to “Give Something Back, Make a Difference for Somebody Else, and Together We Can Make Our Community Better.”
In the last 4 weeks of Seth’s life he spent every available moment bringing this group together. He would even reschedule his chemotherapy treatments because they conflicted with "2010 United" meeting times. Seth told his mentor, Dr. Randy Mask, “Chemo won’t make a difference, but this will."
Seth spent his last 3 days surrounded by friends and family and when God took Seth home just 4 weeks from when he started "2010 United," over 40 members of the Sophomore Class of Azle High School had come together to carry on the message. Seth planted the seed but "2010 United" continued to grow, and eventually had over 100 members. Together this group performed community service projects like:
· Cleared brush in Azle's new Central Park
· Worked in booths for Sting Fling, Neighbors Night Out and Jumping Jack Jamboree
· Participated in Azle High School’s Homecoming and Sting Fling Parades
· Held food drives
· Assisted at Azle ISD’s convocation
· Held parties for the junior high school students
· Painted the old weight room at Azle High School
Two years after Seth and the Sophomore Class formed "2010 United," the group logged over 3,000 total man-hours that were given back to their community and touched the hearts of its citizens. Even though this class graduated 13 years ago, everyone involved with "2010 United" will carry something on in their lives that they learned from Seth. This is why in 2008 the City of Azle proclaimed June 21st as Seth Darnell Day, a day to honor and recognize Seth for his dedication to serve others and the support he provided for The City of Azle.
